Calculators for people who actually build
Deckwright started with a simple frustration: deck calculators that divide area by board size, never mention a joist, and send you to the store a few boards short. Builders don’t plan decks that way. They lay out rows, land seams on joists, and buy lengths. So we built tools that plan the same way, and wrote down every assumption behind them.

How the tools are built and checked
- Open method. Every formula, table and assumption is on the methodology page, with its source. Where published sources disagree, we use the more conservative value and say so.
- Tested code. The calculation engine has automated tests, including every row of the IRC footing table, layout rules for every board plan, and safety stops for loads the tables don’t cover. Browser tests exercise each calculator.
- Limits stated plainly. A ✓ means “within the prescriptive table we used”, never “approved”. See our engineering disclaimer.
Independence
Deckwright is brand-neutral. No manufacturer, retailer or contractor network pays to change any result. The site currently carries no advertising or affiliate links. If that changes, our editorial policy explains how it will be labeled and kept out of the calculations.
Corrections
If you find a mistake in a table, a formula or a guide, please tell us at [Owner to provide: corrections email]. We correct confirmed errors promptly and record material changes on the methodology page.
