Deck span tables

The prescriptive tables behind every Deckwright calculator, laid out for reading on a phone or printing for the job site. The 2021 tables are transcribed from the official ICC text and checked by hash against it. Use the edition your building department has adopted, and check its amendments.

These tables show the 40 psf live load case. The 2021 IRC also has 50, 60 and 70 psf ground-snow tables, which our calculators use when you select a snow load. All values assume No. 2 grade lumber, wet service and a 10 psf dead load. Where a table allows interpolation, our calculators read the more restrictive neighboring column instead. NP = not permitted.

2021 IRC Table R507.6: deck joist spans and cantilevers

Maximum span from the ledger or beam to the supporting beam, and the maximum cantilever past the beam by the joist’s back span. A cantilever may also not exceed ¼ of the actual back span.

2021 IRC Table R507.5(1): deck beam spans

Maximum distance between posts, by the effective joist span: the actual joist span × a factor from Table R507.5(5) (0.66 with no cantilever, 0.72 at C/J = 1/12, 0.80 at 1/10, 0.84 at 1/8, 0.90 at 1/6, 1.00 at 1/4). A beam may overhang its end post by up to ¼ of the beam span.

Ledger fastener spacing (Table R507.9.1.3(1), 40 psf)

On-center spacing of ½″ fasteners connecting a 2x ledger to a 1½″ lumber band joist, with up to ½″ sheathing between. Stagger the fasteners in two rows. The 2021 table also lists 50–70 psf snow loads, which our planner uses.

2018 IRC tables (for jurisdictions still on 2018)

From published reproductions of the 2018 IRC. The 2018 edition sizes joist cantilevers by spacing rather than back span, uses a flat post-height table, and has no snow-load tables. Our calculators use these values only when you select the 2018 edition.

Sources and verification

2021 values were transcribed from the official 2021 IRC on ICC Digital Codes (codes.iccsafe.org, Chapter 5, Section R507). Our automated tests compare a SHA-256 hash of the data with one computed from the live ICC page. Two cells on ICC’s page are malformed (“604” and “6-22” / “5-20” in the redwood-group (3) 2x8 rows at 50 and 60 psf). We use the next, more restrictive column for those. 2018 values come from published reproductions (UpCodes; City of Brainerd, MN; Delhi Charter Township, MI). Details are on the methodology page.
