Why area-based board counts go wrong
The usual shortcut divides the deck area by the area one board covers, then adds 10%. It ignores three things that decide what you actually carry home:
- Boards come in fixed lengths. A 16-foot deck with a ¾-inch overhang on both ends needs 16′-1½″ per row, which won’t come out of a 16-foot board. You have to buy longer boards or plan a seam.
- Seams must land on joists, and good practice keeps them off the joist used by the row next to it. That rules out a lot of “efficient” cuts.
- Offcuts are only useful if something fits them. A 3-foot scrap is waste unless another row needs a 3-foot piece.
This calculator lays out each row the way a builder would, then packs the pieces into your stock lengths with a cutting-stock algorithm that reuses offcuts. The “area-only” number in the blue note shows how far the shortcut would have been off for your deck.
Choosing board lengths
Select only the lengths your store carries in your material. Composite is commonly sold in 12, 16 and 20 ft; pressure-treated 5/4 decking in 8 to 16 ft, sometimes 20 ft. Two habits save the most money:
- Size the deck to the boards. A deck framed at 15′-9½″ instead of 16 ft lets one 16 ft board cover each row, overhang and trim cuts included.
- Compare “fewest seams” with “least waste”. Seamless rows look cleaner, but on many sizes a staggered pattern buys 10–20% less board. Each seam needs a doubled joist or blocking, and this calculator counts them.

Gaps, overhang and the last row
The gap between boards changes the row count: 26 rows of 5½″ boards with 3/16″ gaps cover 147¾″, but with 1/4″ gaps they cover 149¼″. The calculator reports the width of the final ripped row. If it is a sliver, nudge the overhang or the deck depth so the last board is at least half width. For gap guidance by material, see deck board spacing.
