10x20 deck materials: boards, joists & footings

A board-by-board takeoff for a deck that projects 10 ft from the house and runs 20 ft along it. The numbers are computed, not estimated by area.

For a 10×20 deck, buy 35 composite boards (7 × 20 ft + 8 × 16 ft + 20 × 12 ft) or 42 pressure-treated 5/4×6 boards (8 × 16 ft + 20 × 12 ft + 14 × 10 ft).

22 rows of 5½″ boards, including 5% spare. Framing: 19 × 2x8 joists at 16″ o.c., a (2) 2x10 beam on 3 posts, and 3 footings using 13 bags of concrete.

Assumes a deck attached with a ledger, southern pine framing, a dropped beam at the outer edge, 1,500 psf soil and a 36″ deck height. Change any of these in the planner, for example Douglas fir framing, a freestanding deck or a cantilever, and the whole list updates.

Joists that carry butt seams are doubled, and the joist count includes them. Spans come from IRC Tables R507.5 and R507.6 at a 40 psf live load. They are not a substitute for your local code or an engineered design. See the methodology.

10x20 deck questions

How many deck boards for a 10x20 deck?
About 35 composite boards (7 × 20 ft + 8 × 16 ft + 20 × 12 ft) or 42 5/4×6 pressure-treated boards (8 × 16 ft + 20 × 12 ft + 14 × 10 ft), including 5% extra. That assumes 5½″ boards running along the 20 ft side, joists 16″ on center and a ¾″ overhang.
How many screws for a 10x20 deck?
Face-screwed wood decking needs about 786 deck screws: two per board at every joist, plus seam ends, +5%. Hidden-fastener composite needs about 376 clips, 16 starter clips and 32 face screws for the last row.
How many joists, posts and footings for a 10x20 deck?
With joists running 10 ft out from the house at 16″ on center, a 20 ft wide deck takes 16 joists (20 × 12 ÷ 16, rounded up, plus one), plus 3 doubled under board seams. One beam on 3 posts and 3 footings carries the outer edge. If your joists run the other way, the count changes, so check the orientation before you buy.
What size joists for a 10x20 deck?
Attached to the house with the beam at the outer edge, the joists span about 9′ 10 1/2″. In southern pine at 16″ on center that takes 2x8 joists (allowed 11′ 10″, IRC Table R507.6). You need 19 of them, including 3 doubled at seams.
