8x8 deck materials: boards, joists & footings

A board-by-board takeoff for a deck that projects 8 ft from the house and runs 8 ft along it. The numbers are computed, not estimated by area.

For a 8×8 deck, buy 10 composite boards (8 × 20 ft + 2 × 12 ft) or 15 pressure-treated 5/4×6 boards (14 × 12 ft + 1 × 8 ft).

18 rows of 5½″ boards, including 5% spare. Framing: 7 × 2x6 joists at 16″ o.c., a (2) 2x6 beam on 2 posts, and 2 footings using 7 bags of concrete.

Assumes a deck attached with a ledger, southern pine framing, a dropped beam at the outer edge, 1,500 psf soil and a 36″ deck height. Change any of these in the planner, for example Douglas fir framing, a freestanding deck or a cantilever, and the whole list updates.

Joists that carry butt seams are doubled, and the joist count includes them. Spans come from IRC Tables R507.5 and R507.6 at a 40 psf live load. They are not a substitute for your local code or an engineered design. See the methodology.

8x8 deck questions

How many deck boards for a 8x8 deck?
About 10 composite boards (8 × 20 ft + 2 × 12 ft) or 15 5/4×6 pressure-treated boards (14 × 12 ft + 1 × 8 ft), including 5% extra. That assumes 5½″ boards running along the 8 ft side, joists 16″ on center and a ¾″ overhang.
How many screws for a 8x8 deck?
Face-screwed wood decking needs about 303 deck screws: two per board at every joist, plus seam ends, +5%. Hidden-fastener composite needs about 144 clips, 7 starter clips and 14 face screws for the last row.
How many joists, posts and footings for a 8x8 deck?
With joists running 8 ft out from the house at 16″ on center, a 8 ft wide deck takes 7 joists (8 × 12 ÷ 16, rounded up, plus one). One beam on 2 posts and 2 footings carries the outer edge. If your joists run the other way, the count changes, so check the orientation before you buy.
What size joists for a 8x8 deck?
Attached to the house with the beam at the outer edge, the joists span about 7′ 10 1/2″. In southern pine at 16″ on center that takes 2x6 joists (allowed 9′, IRC Table R507.6). You need 7 of them.
